Bio

This presentation explores the neuropsychology of learning and its applications to optimizing musical practice. Drawing on scientific research, it will examine how cognitive processes influence musical skill development and how these principles can be applied in practice. In particular, the talk will integrate anecdotal evidence from the speaker’s diverse educational experiences in various musical environments and cultures, and close work with pedagogues from metropolitan centres such as London, Berlin, Rome, Seoul, Moscow, New York, Montréal, and Geneva, amongst others.

What commonalities can be identified in effective musical practices across these cultures? How can these practices be explained through current neuropsychological literature? Furthermore, how do cultural nuances influence our understanding of musical learning and pedagogy?

The discussion will include insights from the speaker’s doctoral dissertation, Optimizing Musical Practice: A Neuropsychological Approach to Learning (Université de Montréal, 2017), and the knowledge gained during years of study abroad, particularly at the Haute École de Musique de Genève, an institution founded by Franz Liszt. As an anglophone Asian-Canadian pianist who has pursued studies in a variety of linguistic contexts and cultural settings, the value of cross-cultural education has become a central element of my pedagogical approach. This presentation will explore  how bridging diverse cultural perspectives can enrich personal growth and aesthetic development in music education, and provide a backdrop for reflection on a diverse array of musical practices, pedagogical methods, and artistic identities.
