Session Description

How does the representation of Chopin’s pianism affect our understanding of his teaching and practice? Chopin’s fingerings reveal that his approach to piano playing differed from how it appears in many editions of his music. This session focuses on Chopin's fingerings in primary sources. Examples from Etudes Op 10 and Op 25 will be compared to the editions of his pupils. Furthermore, technical configurations found in the Etudes will be linked to complex portions of Chopin's Polish works (Mazurkas, Ballades, Polonaises). Demonstrations will show that primary sources can reveal best practices for teaching fingerings in Chopin’s music. Participants may bring passages with complex fingering or technical problems, and Dr. Dunn will offer a solution.
