Membership Levels

Active Membership

Active members are recognized as qualified teaching professionals, they are conferred all of the rights, privileges, and obligations of the Association, and are subject to the code of ethics.

Active (Full) Membership Criteria

  • To be 18 years and older;
  • To be resident in the province of Quebec;
  • To have a proof of graduate status from a recognized university or institution of music, whose standards are equivalent to or higher than those of the ARCT (Associate of the Royal Conservatory of Music);
  • To have at least 5 years of pedagogical experience acquired through either private or institutional teaching.

Active members have the right to use the designation RMT (registered music teacher).

Aug 15 – Sep 15: $ 135
Sep 16 – Mai 31: $ 145

Provisional Membership

Provisional members are music teachers who do not quite fulfill the requirements for active membership. The provisional status enables new teachers to gain experience through their students’ participation in QMTA activities.

This status is conferred by the QMTA Board of Directors for a period of up to five years. The provisional member’s status will be upgraded to full (active) membership upon review by the Council based on the member’s increased experience and completion of all active membership criteria.

Provisional members are conferred all of the rights, privileges, and obligations of the Association, and are subject to the code of ethics

Provisional Membership Criteria

  • To be 18 years and older;
  • To be resident in the province of Quebec;
  • To be working toward a degree meeting the requirements of an active member;
  • To be teaching at a level comparable to the one of an active member.

Friend Membership

A friend of the QMTA is not a music teacher, but a person who has a deep interest in music and a sincere desire to further the aims and ideals of the Association. Our friend members include piano tuners, music store owners, composers, musicians, accountants, foundation presidents, retired or inactive music teachers, etc.

Friend members cannot be recognized as music teachers. Therefore, while they are entitled to some membership privileges and may attend QMTA activities, they may not present students. Friend members are not covered by insurance.

Friend Membership Criteria

  • To be 18 years and older;
  • To be resident in the province of Quebec.
