Offering in-person lessons in piano, guitar and music theory from my Montreal studio, and on-line lessons anywhere in the world
I was born in Vancouver, British Columbia and grew up in Calgary, Alberta. I studied at the University of Calgary with Charles Foreman and William Jordan before returning to Vancouver to complete a Ph. D in musicology under Vera Micznik. In addition to teaching piano and guitar at private studios in Vancouver, Richmond, Coquitlam and Calgary, I taught core subjects in music theory and history at the University of British Columbia, Wartburg College, The University of Calgary, Ambrose University and the University of Lethbridge's Calgary campus.
From 2014 to 2019, I taught at Morin Music in Calgary, where I led the theory program and worked in teacher development, providing resources to a school of over 700 students and nearly 30 faculty. In October 2019, I moved to Montreal for family reasons, though I still maintain connections with Morin Music Online.
Closest to my heart is the music of the French fin-de-siècle: the music of Debussy, Ravel, Duparc and others. I maintain an active research program, writing on this music for publications and conferences across North America. I am also interested in film music, especially the film music of the 1920s-30s and the Classic Hollywood Revival that began in the mid-1970s with the Star Wars films. My teaching reflects these interests, as well as broader interests in social justice, music and time, and music and identity.
I have a Ph. D in music and over 25 years of experience teaching piano, guitar music theory, music history, harmony and analysis at private conservatories, colleges and universities across Canada and the United States. I have worked with students as young as 4 through college music majors and adults. What I do best is to help students find and develop their musical talents and unleash their creativity. Since each student has different needs and different goals, I customize plans for each one, balancing what they want to learn now with a program that develops skills for a lifetime of music. I am also a music scholar available to help with academic tutoring for university music students and as a researcher for television and film projects.
